The Basque Councilor of Tourism, Commerce and Consumer, Alfredo Retortillo, received the Biosphere Destination Certification in FITUR on January 19th, in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and based on global criteria endorsed by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
This award was presented by Dr. Tomás Azcárate, President of the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), which recognizes Euskadi's commitment to promote sustainable tourism. "Euskadi is one of the most important sustainable tourism regions in the world. Sustainability is already assumed as a guarantee of the future", said Azcárate, who recalled that this quality seal started in 1998 when UN launched Sustainable Tourism as a further goal of humanity.
The Basque Government has also announced the next conference to be held in San Sebastián-Donosti on March 30th and 31th, under the title of "Sustainable Destinations and their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals", an international meeting to discuss specific aspects of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the contribution they can make to tourism destinations.
