Destination Barcelona, member of the Biosphere Destination Community, formed by the city and the counties of the province, has exceeded 1,000 tourism companies and entities with the Biosphere Certified that recognizes good practices in sustainable management of tourism companies and services.

Specifically, 1,043 companies and entities (487 from Barcelona city and 556 from the rest of the counties of the province) have been accredited with the program Compromís para la Sostenibilidad Turística Destino Barcelona Biosphere. The project, born in 2017 and promoted by the Responsible Tourism Institute (ITR) with the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, incorporated in 2019 the Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Tourism Consortium. Through the Biosphere methodology, entities that are committed to a respectful management with the environment, culture and the social and economic environment of the city and the counties of Barcelona are recognized.

Of the 556 companies and entities certified in the counties of Barcelona (excluding Barcelona city), 100 are from Maresme, 76 from Baix Llobregat, 69 from Alt Penedès, 66 from Garraf, 58 from Osona, 43 from Vallès Oriental, 36 from Bages, 36 from Berguedà, 36 from Vallès Occidental, 27 from Anoia, 7 from Moianès and 2 from Barcelonès.

By sectors, the majority of companies and entities with Biosphere certification in the counties of Barcelona (excluding Barcelona city) are tourist accommodations (83), followed by tourist destinations (54), museums (47), rural accommodations (46), tourist information offices (46), restaurants (43), wineries (37), beaches (35), and experience companies (28). There are also travel agencies, tourist guides, campsites, stores or protected natural areas, among other categories.

Biosphere allows to improve the positioning of the company or service in relation to sustainable tourism and gives it more visibility at national and international level. The certification is open to all those private companies and public entities that want to improve their internal management and their social image by committing to sustainability.
