The signing of the Letter of Commitment on Monday January 18, marks the recognition of the town of Sitges to a sector, tourism, which certainly emerges as the main industry locally. Sitges wants to ensure responsible and sustainable management in economic, cultural and environmental terms of their tourism heritage, why it has signed a Letter of Commitment Biosphere, which collects the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (ODS) of the UN and its application in tourism through the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism +20.
The certification, granted to destinations, accommodation, tourism entities and products worldwide, recognizes and certifies the commitment to responsible management of tourism. In turn, the sustainability certification includes measures which are grouped in the areas of social and economic development of the tourist destination, cultural heritage conservation, environmental management, and the involvement and satisfaction of visitors and interest groups.
Biosphere Destination is a worldwide certification recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and promoted by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), an independent body driven by UNESCO, which promotes tourism developed through sustainable activities under the field of the triple bottom line: environmental, economic and sociocultural.
As part of this project took place yesterday, at the Miramar Building Auditorium, the signing of the letter of commitment to Responsible Tourism. A step forward on the road to obtaining the Biosphere Destination certification. The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Sitges, Miquel Forns; the Councillor for Tourism, Aurora Carbonell; Responsible Tourism Institute chairman, Thomas Azcarate; President of the Guild of Hospitality Sitges, Joan Anton Matas; and representatives of the tourist, gastronomic and commercial sector of Sitges.
